1. Verification of employment?
What do businesses mean by "will you be able to provide proof that you are eligible to legally work in the United States".
Answer: It means...do you have a Social Security Card...or immigration papers that say you are legally allowed to work in the U.S.

2. Those with a B.A. in History…?
To anyone here with a B.A. in History, what did you end up doing with your degree? Did you find a career along the lines of history or did you find employment elsewhere?

3. is it legal to withhold a paycheck as punitive measure?
I am a teacher at a private school in SC. The school issued a revised employee Handbook in August, which was AFTER contracts were signed in May. This new Handbook includes a requirement that a signature page be turned into the administrative office. This page is a signed verification that the employee will abide by the Handbook, etc. But it also includes a statement that is troubling: "THE EMPLOYEE'S PAY MAY BE WITHHELD UNTIL THE ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE IS IN RECEIPT OF THE SIGNATURE PAGE." Is this tactic legal?, especially in light of the fact that this Handbook was issued AFTER the employment contract was signed and no mention of this stipulation was made in the contract. Thank you very much for any insight you may have regarding this matter.
Answer: No, it is not legal, unless you sign something agreeing to it. But, keep in mind, they can terminate you for any reason.

4. Self-Employment Tax Problem?
We have filed standard taxes for years with no issue at all. This year, we began receiving paperwork from the IRS for a "self-employment" tax. I'm not sure what to do. The return in question was 2008. I tried the "work online" job boards in 2008 and made around $1200 for the entire year, it was a failure to say the least. I researched my taxes that year and found if I made over $400 a month, I had to file, but my tax preparer said not to bother if it was under $800 because I wouldn't be able to pay taxes on an amount less than that. My average was $50 to $200 a month. I never received any paperwork from the online company or anything. Everything was done via the internet. I quit after that year. Now, 2 years later, the IRS is stating I owe $600 in self-employment taxes. I didn't make, but $1200 for the entire year. I worked part-time years ago and made around $400-$500 per month, again my preparer wouldn't use my forms, she said there was no taxes taken out and not enough to make a difference. There was never an issue from it. I don't understand why it would make a difference now. Our yearly income is around $19K. We have an autistic child and I can't work, I need to be able to go to school when they need me. I don't understand how $1200 can make any kind of difference. I don't know where to go. A friend of mine lives in the next state and the IRS has declared they overpaid them $1K when they didn't. They make much less than we do annually. Are there any resources for low income families when it comes to IRS problems? Any help will be most appreciated.
Answer: Run away from your tax preparer. He or she didn't want to (or didn't know how to) file a basic Schedule C. Saying "It's not enough to matter" was nothing more than blowing it off and hoping it went away. Yeah, with income tax, self-employment tax, late payment penalties, and interest, a $1,200 income figure could balloon to $600 due. Check out a VITA office. They do volunteer tax work and are usually qualified to process basic self-employment scenarios. Especially this time of year, the folks working VITA are probably the most experienced volunteers. I believe VITA stands for Volunteers in Tax Assistance, or something like that. It should be in the phone book. I agree with the other respondents. Assuming what you say is correct, your preparer is incompetent. I'm very reluctant to say that, but if they really said it didn't matter, they were either (1) incompetent, or (2) lying because they didn't want to bother to prepare the forms. The issue is remedial - one step above putting wages on line 7 of Form 1040.

5. What do you think of the stand-off between Cricketers and Cricket Australia over proposed cut in salary?
Australian cricketers and their Board are heading towards a bitter stand-off with the former threatening not to sign their contract for next year over the latter's attempt to snatch 10 per cent of their Indian Premier League salary. The IPL Governing Council, in its recent meeting to discuss the rules and regulations of its fourth season next year, had ruled that 10 per cent of players' salaries would go to their respective Boards. The decision was taken as there has always been a pressure from Boards like Cricket Australia over their lack of earnings from their players' involvement in the lucrative Twenty20 league. A fuming Australian Cricketers Association said the CA has gone behind its back to secure a cut from the BCCI. ACA Chief Executive Paul Marsh said he has told CA that the players would not sign contracts for the next year if the Board cut 10 per cent from their IPL salaries. "The Australian Cricketers Association has made it known to Cricket Australia that any attempt to take 10 per cent, or any other amount for that matter, from the IPL salaries of Australian players is completely unacceptable and will be opposed in the strongest possible way by us," Marsh said. "CA simply has no right to effectively charge a commission on income earned by players from outside their employment to CA. This is akin to an employer trying to take 10 per cent of an employee's wages from a second job he works on weekends," he was quoted as saying by 'The Australian'. Marsh asked CA to refuse the arrangement with the BCCI or face the consequences. "Regardless of the decision made by the IPL, we would hope CA would act in good faith to its players by not taking this proposed 10 per cent," he said. "Should they seek to do, so we would expect players to give serious consideration to either not signing an IPL contract that contains this deduction, or not signing future CA contracts," he added @Bingalee: I have read it. Only the Australian Players are objecting to the move by CA.
Answer: Though it is ethically a wrong stand by CA to snatch a part of the money earned by the cricketers from IPL which is not regulated by CA. But however they are bound by CA contract rule. They are playing in the IPL after NOC issued from CA, so CA can force them to take away 10%. But I believe it is ethically wrong.

6. Should i let him go or give him a chance?
I am in a relationship with a guy who wants to get married and whom my kids adore with a passion, and he is not abusive like my past two relationships, which is a big plus. The only issue I have with our relationship is that I am carrying all the burden of ensuring that bills are being paid. He is an ex-felon, which has made it hard for him to find employment like he use to have before getting convicted of possession of stolen goods over 10 years ago. He is working; however, what he contributes is just not enough to meet me halfway. Sometimes he will pawn his things just to have money for gas to go to work, to keep time on his phone or buy my baby papers if needed until I get paid. We are constantly arguing over finance and he gets insulted feeling that I am not being supportive or patient. Grant it, my last two relationships which one was a marriage of 11 years, there were no financial problems; yet, they were abusive in a lot of ways, and I am so happy to be free from that. Now I am in a relationship wherein he has a lot of the qualities I prayed for but the one thing standing in the way is that he is financially unstable. Should I let him go or give him a chance?
Answer: Well first off, I do not think you should date anybody. If your divorced and have kids its not fair to the kids to bring people in their life that you may or may not fall in love with. You need to focus on your kids and only your kids. When you have kids your life doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is the kids. As far as giving him a chance or not. I don't think its fair that you make him feel bad for trying. It sounds like he does everything he can to help you, YOUR kids and himself. Being ex felon makes it hard to get a job. But he is actually working, so it shows he is trying. The economy is bad right now anyways. I think its hard for anybody to find a good job. You should not depend on anyone to take care of you or YOUR kids. That is your responsibility. At least he is trying.
